Sioux Falls Affordable Housing Competition

The Sioux Falls, South Dakota affordable housing study will be a local competition, including the greater Sioux Falls area. Entrants must be employed or a student in one of the following fields relating to residential design and building: architecture, landscape architecture, building design, interior design, urban planning, construction, construction management, engineering, affordable housing, housing policy, disability/elderly services, real estate development and marketing/communications. Entrants can participate as an individual, as well as in a team. There is no limit to the amount of entrants on a Team, but entrants are only allowed to participate on one team. The challenge is to design an affordable, functional, contextual, and LEED attainable house for a local family. Homes need to be $100,000 (including materials and construction costs), no greater than 950 square feet, and must be able to demonstrate the ability to achieve LEED for Homes platinum certification. One winner will be chosen and announced on February 1. That team will assist Community Development who will prepare construction documents,bid packages, and oversee construction administration services. Construction will begin during the Summer of 2011.

Avera Garden Blessing & Kick Off

St. Isidore Centennial Garden organizers are having a garden blessing and kick-off event this Friday to usher in the garden's second year.  The garden is located across Cliff Avenue from McKennan's main camus and currently services Avera employees.  Last year, over 50 plots were planted with produce, pumpkins and flowers.  If there's an over abundance of produce, staff are encouraged to donate it to places like the Banquet and the Food Pantry.

Building Permit Tomorrow!

Tomorrow we will be eligible to acquire a building permit for the Prototype Garden Shelter at Avera.  We have had several meetings with Sioux Falls Construction, who is donating their time and materials along with numerous other donors, in preparation for spring construction.  We should be breaking ground within the week!  Thanks to everyone for hanging in there through zoning issues this past fall and winter!  A huge thanks to... Plain Green Lecture Series #1: Adventures in Haiti

During the Summer of 2010, Stacey began a year-long fellowship with Architecture for Humanity working in Haiti rebuilding schools destroyed by the earthquake earlier that year. The largest school campus at Bon Berger Pele (Good Shepherd in Pele) will accommodate 1,100 kindergarten through high school students in one of the roughest slums in the world called Cite de Soliel. Her presentation will describe this work along with other projects and adventures. She returned home in August 2011.
